Noe Residence

Location:

San Francisco, California

Threaded into a long, slender lot, two units come together as a cohesive whole. Their experience is made fluid through a series of interlocking volumes, oak floor tying the sequence together, offset against bright interiors and marble accents to give each space a lithe, breathy air. This lightness is clear on the interior — where spaces, awash with sun, are wide and capacious — and emphasized by a brief moment of heaviness in the transition from the exterior, which is rendered in dark tones and marked by ebony-stained cedar. Just past the entrance, the foyer space, delineated by wide windows, opens up to cut through the foyer’s glassy expanse. The result is a space that gently holds its inhabitants between light and dark, almost suspended in the air.
